My Approach To Couples Therapy

Life is comprised of so many layers. The layers of who we are as individuals, the baggage of our past, the struggles of our present: children, work, insecurities, individual depression or anxiety --- all add up and often spill over into our relationships. These layers impact how we show up for ourselves as well as the varied dynamics of relationships around us; with the inclusion of those we have committed to and love the most. Therapy is a beautiful space to work through those dynamics --- individually or together.

My name is Bionca Stewart. I am a fully licensed clinician at Couples ATL. I am a Gottman-trained therapist with over 12 years of clinical experience. The early stages of my career began with intensive crisis intervention work and acute mental health, while the later stage of my career has transitioned to 1:1 therapeutic work with a primary referral focus on couples and individuals. I work with couples and individuals who come from varied backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, same-sex, and varied personal experiences.

My approach is humanity first. I lead with love, empathy, integrity, and compassion. I believe the best results in therapy come from collaboration. I want to work with you to create the therapy that best suits your needs. My greatest strength lies in my ability to “meet you where you are.” I want each client to enter this therapeutic space feeling a sense of comfort and connection, to show up vulnerable and in their truth. Truth is how we rebuild. Trust is how we connect. — With both, we embark on this journey of growth and healing together.

In my therapeutic approach, I begin my focus on three core principles. The first of them being foundation — the root of your relationship. We explore your personal histories and how these shape your partnership. We further explore the development of your partnership and how you were built together.

I practice from a total body and wellness perspective. The second and third of those principles are the state of connection and communication. The health of a relationship is often tested during the pivotal moments of feeling an emotion, your choice in how you choose to respond to that emotion and the way you further choose to communicate those feelings. — The first step is to schedule, the second is to show up willing to do the work — Together, we can do the rest.

  • Bionca is an incredible therapist. Through our sessions, she has helped me understand the underlying causes of my anxiety, and worked with me to set up routines to alleviate them. She has encouraged me to be kinder to myself, helped me increase my self esteem, and has celebrated every little success along the way. I’m extremely grateful for the impact she’s had on my life.
