  • If you're here for individual counseling:

When you connect with a customer service representative, mention that you have inquiries about out-of-network coverage. Here are some questions to ask:

Do you provide reimbursement for CPT code 90834? This code is for standard individual counseling sessions.

Do you provide reimbursement for diagnosis code F43.20? This code indicates a general adjustment disorder. While we can't diagnose you without an assessment, many clients fall under this category, making it a common inquiry. If they cover this diagnosis, they usually cover most common mental health diagnoses.

If you're here for couples counseling:

When reaching out to your insurance provider with this query, they may initially respond with a yes. However, this affirmation often pertains to situations where one partner accompanies the other for support during individual therapy sessions (for conditions like bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, etc.). It would constitute insurance fraud to file such claims for actual couples counseling sessions, where both partners are active participants addressing relational issues. Nevertheless, there are some insurance companies now considering reimbursement for genuine relationship/couples/marriage counseling.

To determine if your provider offers this coverage, contact the number listed on your insurance card and request benefits information. Then, specifically inquire about the following:

"Do you reimburse for procedure code 90847?" This code signifies dual participation in counseling sessions.

"Do you reimburse for diagnosis code Z63.0?" This code accurately reflects the focus and purpose of counseling, indicating "Relationship Distress with Spouse or Intimate Partner
