Personal Counseling for Rapid Change

Maybe you’ve been struggling with feelings that overwhelm you, such as worry, self doubt, anger, or sadness. Perhaps you’ve felt powerless to change your partner, or your own self-destructive or relationship-sabotaging behaviors. Whatever you’re looking to change in yourself, we’re here to help. You don’t have to continue to struggle alone and change is always possible.

Likely, you feel some urgency to change so that you can feel better sooner than later. Reaching out for expert help is an important first step. At Couples Counseling ATL, we don’t believe that significant personal change has to take a long time (contrary to popular belief, research supports the idea that rapid change is possible in counseling).

Most of the counseling we can provide is meant to be time-limited, goal directed, supportive and structured. Through one-on-one sessions with your counselor, you can learn more effective tools that will bring you closer to the person you want to be, the relationships you wish to have, and the life you want to live.

We are specialists in helping you get beyond feeling

  • Tense, worried, panicked, or obsessed

  • Down, depressed, sad, unmotivated

  • Disturbed by painful memories or experiences

  • Frustrated, angry, or disconnected from someone in your life

If you struggle with any of the above, please know that help is possible. You deserve to feel “good”. Our team of highly trained, caring therapists are here for you. Whoever you choose to work with, know that each of us will work hard to understand you, and then help you learn more constructive, research-based ways to overcome any of the issues you are currently facing in your life.

More than “Talk Therapy

Ensuring that we provide individualized, evidenced-based, effective counseling to all of my clients is very important to us. Most of our therapists are intensively trained in “TEAM Cognitive Behavioral Therapies”, and we are all also intensive training in Gottman Couples Therapy. Bridge Beatty, one of our therapists, also offers “Walk and Talk” therapy to adults and adolescents at our Poncey Highlands and Buckhead offices.

Team CBT Therapy

TEAM CBT Therapy, created by Dr. David Burns, is not a new “school” of therapy, but rather a framework for conducting evidence-based therapy. Although therapy has strong roots in CBT and also draws on effective techniques from many other schools of therapy.

Here is a brief description of the TEAM approach:

T = Testing E = Empathy A = Agenda Setting M = Methods

TESTING

Ever felt “not quite right” but you can’t put your finger on what’s really bothering you? “Testing” helps you and your counselor to clarify what the problem is. This part of CBT involves completing questionnaires that assess your mood and other symptoms at the beginning and end of every session (yes, every single time!). The questionnaires also allow you to give your therapists feedback about how the session went. This way, we can measure your progress in counseling and stay on track, increasing your chances for successful outcomes.

EMPATHY

If you’re like most people, you probably like having a place to talk without filter, where you can relax and know that you’ll be cared about, not judged, treated with respect, and understood. Here at Couples Counseling ATL, we believe that the empathic connection is the single most critical ingredient for successful counseling. But we know that successful outcomes are built on more. Because we believe in evidence-based counseling methods that work, we know that even our most sophisticated methods are going to fall flat and not work without the most empathetic connection to our clients where they know we 100% care.

AGENDA SETTING

Only after we’ve been able to connect and you feel really cared about do we proceed in establishing a clear goal that you’d like to achieve. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of change and what will probably be required of you in order to accomplish your personal goals (such as elimination of anxiety, relief from depression, etc.). Most people discover that there are subtle, often hidden, advantages to their (even painful!) symptoms. For example, anxiety may be helping you avoid some really uncomfortable situations. Perhaps your beating yourself up with guilt is actually a reflection of your good value system. Maybe hopelessness is protecting you from feeling let down. Whatever issues your’re facing, you will probably feel a lot of different feelings about change and getting “better”. This part of counseling—agenda setting—helps us to make sense of all the different motivations and barriers to change you’re experiencing and and whether the potential rewards outweigh the costs.

METHODS

The final phase of TEAM CBT is the best part because it’s where the real change happens, thanks to all the very effective and powerful cognitive, behavioral and interpersonal tools and techniques that we have to offer. These methods can help you with depression, anxiety, habits, addictions, and relationship problems.

We believe that therapy is an important decision and investment of time and money; you want to make sure you are making the right choice. Having a "good fit" between a client and therapist is critical for a successful outcome. This is why we offer a free 30 minute initial phone or video consultation if you would like to meet any of us before deciding whether or not you would like to work with us. Here are some tips for choosing the right therapist.

Also, if you cannot afford our services, are not able to see a counselor in-network with your insurance company, or need low fee counseling services, please consider contacting one of the training facilities, community counseling centers or educational institutions in Georgia we’ve compiled on this list. Although we are not able to see every couple at a reduced cost, your ability to afford treatment should never be a barrier to getting help, and thankfully there are many privately and publicly funded agencies that can help!
